Army look to close gap at Manchester Sevens

Wednesday 30 June 2010 (UR7s & Action Images/Lee Mills)

British Army half-back Gerhard Wessells his side's narrow loss at the West Country Sevens final will motivate them for the two remaining legs of the National Sevens Series.

A late comeback saw the Army almost snatch a win against Samurai at Keynsham RFC but they eventually went down 36-33 in an epic contest, having to settle for a runners-up spot.

This Sunday’s Manchester Sevens (July 4) marks the penultimate leg of the Series with Newquay (July 17) the concluding round.

The Army currently lie second in the overall standings, twelve points behind Samurai. The HFW Wailers and White Hart Marauders are close behind in third and fourth respectively.

“Yeah it was a tough one to lose but I have got to give credit to our guys who really stepped up in the West Country,” said Wessells.

“Spirit is good in the camp as always and losing by a small margin will make us even more determined for the rest of the Series.“

With the sevens season following on from a gruelling 15-a-side campaign, the Army have had to deal with a long list of absentees due to injuries. Wessells stepped in for usual captain Mark Lee in the West Country with Fiji star Apolosi Satala also unavailable.

Wessells is no under no illusions that Manchester is effectively a must-win event to keep the Series alive for Newquay.

“It’s been a tiring season so far, so it is important that we rest and recover before Manchester with a bit of training as well. Samurai proved themselves to be a tough team but they have been pushed hard so far in both finals.

“We have to look for maximum points at Manchester. The National Series is a step up and we have to concentrate every game otherwise teams can turn you over.”

The Army have been pooled with Olorun ID and the Game Face Pacific Warriors for Sunday, hosted by Sale FC, Heywood Rd.
