Russian club VVA-Moscow Region has won the European Champions Cup for the third time-in-a-row.
It was also the third year in succession that VVA and Yug have both contested the final in another all-Russian affair, with the former taking it 44-17 this time around.
Yug faced their stiffest test in the semi-finals coming up against RugbyRocks finalists, Esher from England.
A now trademark disciplined and physical defensive display from Yug, shut the quicksilver Esher side down in the 12-5 victory. Esher went on to win the third/fourth play-off.
“We would have liked to have seen more foreign teams at this event. Especially, from England or Scotland – some first-class sides. It is always Russian clubs in the final here, but only because the competition level isn't high,” said VVA’s Aleksandr Yanyushkin.
Many of the players representing VVA’s and Yug will now focus their attentions on the European Championship Finals, also hosted in Moscow.
The sport is enjoying growing popularity in Russia recently, with Moscow being awarded Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2013.
