Spain proved the class act at the Men’s Open competition at the West Country Sevens.
The national team, who have won two stages on the FIRA Sevens this year, met Surrey’s Touraid Castaways in the final and proved dominant winning 47-0.
The Spanish ran in seven tries on the main National Sevens Series pitch at Keynsham RFC, with two tries to new Nottingham signing Cesar Sempere and a brace also for Facundo Lavino.
Despite the Castaways valiant attempts to impose themselves on the final, the Spaniards’ execution and match fitness was on a superior level.
The side were late entrants to the West Country event as preparations continue for the FIRA European Finals in Russia in July. They were led by experienced captain and playmaker Palbo Feijóo.
There was a genuine international feel to the event with the Spanish having to overcome the Black Stallions, a sevens side representing Nigeria, in their semi-final.
The Scorpions were expected to feature strongly at the event and worked their way through to the semi-final stage, but were undone by a determined Castaways, with Ian Stewart’s cross field kick proving the key for the winning ‘Ways.
The Godfathers bought a strong side to the West Country with Sam Saunders captaining and highly-rated brothers De la Rey Veendendal and Darryl Veendendal both included.
But they were undone by the Scorpions in the last-eight with the Spanish beating local boys the West Country Cavaliers.
The Navy Sharks were making their first appearance of the season, last seen at the Dubai Invitational Sevens back in December. Despite tries to Niall Copeland and Jon Humphries a late breakaway for the Stalliions saw them through in an entertaining quarter-final.
Kamikaze, winners at RugbyRocks, bought a large squad to Keynsham and surprisingly it was their ‘B’ team (‘Up n Under’) who made it through to the last-eight thanks to a impressive win against the Marauders Academy in Group H. But they were hit on the counter-attack by the Castaways in the final quarter-final clash of the day ending their Cup run.
While Apache made the quarter-finals of the National Sevens Series, their development side (Chiefs) made good progress beating the Kamikaze 1st VII in the Plate quarter-finals, but eventually losing in the final to the Outlaws.
D7W, runners-up at Winchester, at the beginning of the season were victorious in the Bowl with the Camarthen Warriors making up for a hugely disappointing group stages performance to win the Spoon competition
Moss Lane Coyotes.
