Group A: 1. Samurai, 2. Apache, 3. RB Ronin
Top seeds Samurai signalled their intent early with a thumping 56-0 win over Raging Bull Ronin. The National Series’ leading scorer, Simon Hunt, continued his fine form rushing over for a hat-trick. Welsh Sevens’ Lee Rees (2), Jake Abbott, and Geoff Griffiths also crossed the whitewash for a side coached by Russell Earnshaw and Paul John.
Things weren’t so easy for the Series leaders against Apache though and Dan Connolly’s early second half try would have concerned the Samurai camp. But tries for Welsh colleagues Rees and Jevon Groves backed up by a destructive John Rudd effort saw Samurai through 33-5.
Apache joined them in the Cup quarter-finals with a morale-boosting 38-0 win over a luckless Ronin. A couple of individual efforts provided a brace for James Greenwood. His Cambridge University teammate Sandy Reid also crossed up with Gareth Williams, James Hawken, and impressive Will Jones getting also touching down.
Group B: 1. British Army, 2. Gilbert Pups, 3.Trust PA Cavaliers
Guest side Trust PA Cavaliers were looking to cause an upset in their opener against the British Army. Captain Rhidian McGuire’s try gave the local boys hope. But tries from Burenivalu, Wessels, and Laqekoro saw the Army home,26-14.
Army captain for the day Gerhard Wessels led by example scoring early against the Gilbert Pups. James Stephenson replied for the Pups as they looked to take advantage of the Army’s suspect lack of pace out wide. But the Army were not to be deterred, finishing top of the group thanks to tries for Yamoyamo, Ratubuli, Quasevatini and Burenivalu.
The Pups did advance to the quarter-finals with a 7-38 win over the Cavaliers. James Stevenson (2), Matt Vaughan, Neville Edwards, and Scotland Sevens’ Ross Curle all scorers.
Group C: 1. HFW Wailers, 2. Shamrock Warriors, 3. Olorun ID
Olorun ID once again met the HFW Wailers in the Group stages but again lost out, this time by 33-7. Adam Barnard, Sione Onesi, Tyson Lewis and the dynamic Hamish Smales put the Wailers 21-0, but Ricky Thomas replied for the ID. Josh Fowles’ two tries finished off a professional Wailers performance.
The Wailers again looked assured against the guest side from Ireland; the Shamrock Warriors. A cracking line from Jack Harrison got them going, with Lewis, Barnard, and Scott Riddell also going over in the 28-7 win.
The all important ID/Warriors match-up went in favour of the Irish. Mark Sexton’s impressive late scores proving the key. It meant the guest side headed to the quarter-finals, with ID again forced to seek silverware in thePlate.
Group D: 1. WH Marauders, 2. Akuma Smurfs, 3. Les Bleus
The Akuma Smurfs raced into a 19-7 lead against White Hart Marauders in the Group D clash. Steve Taylor’s try giving the Welshmen a 19-7 lead. But the Marauders hit back with soon-to-be Harlequins Academy youngsters Charlie Walker and Miles Mantella edging the Marauders through, 19-26.
Things were easier for them against Les Bleus, as they topped the group following a 36-0 victory. Mantella (2) and Walker scored again backed up by half-back Jack Walsh and speedster Lee McLaughlin.
Les Blues again went down when it was their turn to play the Smurfs. Welsh 15-a-side international Tom James scored early but the French hit back through Florent Gibouin. Two Marcus Johnston tries proved good enough to give the Smurfs their second quarter-final in a week.
