UR7s have announced the pools and match schedule for the second leg of the National Sevens Series, continuing this Saturday at the West Country Sevens (June 19).
Samurai International’s breathtaking win at RugbyRocks sees them head to Kenysham RFC as number one seeds.
The draw has been based on the top four performing core sides from RugbyRocks being placed separately in four groups as the leading seeds.
The three West Country Sevens guest sides have been placed in Groups B, C and D respectively.
Samurai leads the charge in Group A joined by Apache and Raging Bull Ronin. A late Geoff Griffiths try denied Apache a win over an out of sorts Samurai in the group stages at RugbyRocks.
The British Army lost out to Esher in the semi-finals in Richmond and will be looking to make amends at the weekend. They lead the charge in Group B along with the Gilbert Pups and local side the Trust PA Cavaliers.
HFW Wailers, tied for second place in the Series with the Army, showed genuine potential with the likes of Scott Riddell and Tyson Lewis impressing in London. They head Group C and will again meet Olorun ID in their opener followed by a clash against the Shamrock Warriours.
Group D has an international flavour to it with Welshmen Akuma Smurfs the main seed. Joining them will be the White Hart Marauders and Les Bleus - a development squad to the French national team.
The top two sides in each group will advance to the Cup quarter-finals, with the third placed teams heading to the Plate competition.
Highly competitive
“RugbyRocks really did start this Series off with a bang. The standard of sevens was, as predicted, very high,” said Tom Burwell, National Sevens Series Operations Director.
“The final in particular will long live in the memory with Samurai setting the benchmark to the other core sides in the competition. Playing a second tournament in a week, I think you will see the players making ever fewer mistakes, making the standard even greater.
“We welcome the guest sides, Les Bleus, Shamrock Warriors, and the local boys the Trust PA Cavaliers who will of course be joining the nine core sides. There are some mouth-watering clashes early on for the crowd at Keynsham to look forward to. The National Sevens Series is hotting up nicely,” added Burwell.
Following the West Country festival the Series heads to Manchester (Sale FC, Heywood Rd, July 4) and Newquay (Newquay Surf Sports Centre, July 19).
Sky Sports will broadcast the Series with a 90 minute primetime highlights show from each of the four tournaments that will incorporate the Series across June and July.
