Pups to build UK reputation with National Series

Thursday 10 June 2010 (UR7s)

The Gilbert Pups will hope to make an impression when the inaugural National Sevens Series kicks off on Saturday at London’s RugbyRocks.

Coached by the current Ireland Sevens coach John Skurr, the Pups have been drawn in Group A with the Akuma Smurfs and invitational side, the Kirk Petro Pyrenees.

The side's experiences are limited in the UK due to the team often preferring overseas events.

Ross Curle and Richard Mill both have experience with the Scotland Sevens squad but the rest of the side are based around London.

Blackheath’s Matt Vaughan will be an influential figure on Saturday along with Esher’s Roddy Turner and scrum-half Jack Gash (Barking).

Interestingly some of the registered Pup players will be against them on Saturday, with Mark Odejobi and Jonny Hylton representing their clubs Esher for the first leg being played at Richmond RFC. Both are expected later in the Series along with the highly rated Sam Stitcher.

The Pups once again reached the semi-finals in the hugely competitive Amsterdam Sevens before losing out once more to National Series rivals, Samurai International. They also lost out to the Marauders in the group stages in Bournemouth.
