Portugal were the winners of the fifth leg of this year’s FIRA European Sevens, beating Italy in the final in Split.
This was Portugal’s first FIRA appearance of the summer, with Tomaz Morais’ team participating at the final two 2009/10 IRB Sevens World Series events in London and Edinburgh at the end of May.
The Portuguese met Italy in last weekend’s final, overrunning the Azurri 38-7 in a dominant display. In the semi-finals Portugal again were clinical in beating Bucharest runners-up The Netherlands (31-5) with Italy accounting for Rainer Kumm’s Germany (24-14).
In the FIRA European Sevens circuit teams must plays in at least two tournaments in to qualify for the season-ending finale, which will be held this year in Russia on 10-11 July.
This weekend sees the final qualifying stage held at Paphos in Cyprus where the likes of Portugal, France, Germany, Georgia, Lithuania and Poland will all be fighting it out to clinch the final positions for the Moscow final.
