Olorun ID look for National Series consistency

Wednesday 9 June 2010 (UR7s)

Olorun ID head into this Saturday’s National Sevens Series first leg at London’s RugbyRocks as an unknown quantity.

Despite still being only in their second year ,the side has been able to attract a powerful looking squad to compete at the inaugural four leg Series, which heads to the West Country (June 19), Manchester (July 4) and Newquay (July 17) after this weekend.

Experienced ID man Dan Pointon will again lead the side with the former Gloucester scrum-half boasting representative honours through various England age groups.

International sevens experience will come from the likes of Ollie Frost (England), Ricky Thomas (Wales), and veteran forward Marc de Marigny, a former South Africa Sevens captain now playing in Wales for Llandovery.

Chris Morgan was involved with Wales for this year’s Adelaide Sevens, the fifth round of the 09/10 IRB Sevens World Series. The Neath man is expected to add some serious cutting edge when he plays.

With the side’s player base in recent times being accused of being too large, they can rely on ID regulars such as George Evans, Jaike Carter and Sam Shires to give some structure.

Barking try-machine Dave Vincent is a big coup with Sweden’s Andy Daish another player with international class. Cinderford’s Tim Stephenson has the ability to orchestrate proceedings from fly-half.

The side broke onto the invitational circuit with a bang in winning the New York Thanksgiving Sevens (December 2008) and San Diego Invitational (February 2008). Their progress over last season’s European form was patchy but they showed some strong performances at Church Sevens, Brighton and won the Plate in Newquay.

This year's sole showing saw them make the Cup quarter-finals of the very strong ULR Sevens (Bury) where they lost out to Samurai International.

At Saturday’s RugbyRocks in Richmond, ID will face HFW Wailers and Esher in the group stages.

“To be part of this Series is a big step for this side and I just hope we can do ourselves justice,” says Alex Taylor, Olorun ID’s Team Manager.

“This side is still relatively new on the circuit and with the players at our disposal we have the ability to upset and turnover big teams. We just need some consistency and to concentrate in every game. I’m quietly optimistic but it is a great challenge”.
