Galloping Greens keen to make Ella family reunion a winning one

Wednesday 7 January 2009 (NT News)

Ex Aussie sevens coach Glen Ella will take the reins of renowned Sydney club Randwick at the Heineken Hottest 7s in the World.

His brother Gary, the club’s head coach, will manage the side whilst Mark Ella is an ambassador for the $60,000 event. All three of the famous Aboriginal brothers who wore the gold jersey will be at Darwin’s Austar Park from January 24-25, according to Northern Territory News.

The Ella brothers are famed with revolutionising three-quarter play in the 80’s launching Randwick, known as Galloping Greens, into one of the most exciting outfits in world rugby.

The club has produced 99 Wallabies - 12 of whom have gone on to captain Australia. Last year Randwick was a grand finalist in New South Wales first grade and the premier in fourth grade.

Randwick finished fourth at the Air Pacific 10s in Fiji in October and was fourth at the Singapore Sevens in November.

Glen Ella coached the Australian sevens team from 2005-07 and he'll have the reins of a stunning Randwick squad bidding to win its first Hottest 7s trophy.

The Randwick side includes Australian sevens players Danny Kroll and David Dillon.

Solid defenders David Vizer and Troy Boston are also in the line-up whilst Ex-Western Province youngster Luke Titus is a new additon.

Exciting footballer Bracken Henry has also joined from the Sharks and is a fast and exciting player with great ball skills.

Ex-English first division winger Richard Briggs is also new to Randwick but is an experienced sevens operator, as is veteran Dan Inman – a big unit and hard man.

The squad also includes promising halfback Sam Hobbs, red-headed flanker Stephen Bennie - who Randwick hopes will be another Simon Poidevin - and young Fijian flyer Kiti Vasu.
