Russia and Romania take FIRA stages

Tuesday 1 June 2010 (UR7s)

With Russia’s first VII taking the Shield at the Edinburgh Sevens, it was left to their understudies to claim victory in the fourth stage of the FIRA Sevens in Odessa.

It proved a rollercoaster weekend for Russia who lost to Ukraine (5-10) and only just scraped past Romania (22-19) on the day 1 pool stages.

They again were forced to dig deep in the semi-finals beating Georgia 21-19. This seemed to take pressure off them as they looked more relax in the final, playing their best sevens of the weekend to beat Moldova 35-12.

Moldova beat hosts Ukraine 19-14 in another tight semi-final, with the competitive nature of the tournament a feature of the weekend.

Ukraine finished up in third after beating the Georgians in a play-off.

The previous weekend saw Romania delight their home fans by taking the third stage in Bucharest.
The Romanians beat The Netherlands 29-0 in a one sided final after overcoming Russia 19-5 at the semi-finals. Russia took third beating Moldova 24-7.

The FIRA European Sevens consists of six legs that are played in six cities throughout the continent. Countries play in at least two events and those with the most qualifying points go on to play in the final in Moscow in mid-July. Russia are the defending overall champions.
