Samoa crowned champions at Edinburgh Sevens

Sunday 30 May 2010 (UR7s & IRB/Martin Seras Lima)

Overall champions Samoa finished their IRB season in style taking out the Edinburgh Sevens at Murrayfield.

The islanders clinched their first ever Series crown in a dramatic last four clash against England before completing the perfect weekend with an outstanding 41-14 win against Australia in the Final.

It proved a fitting finale for the season’s leading try-scorer Mikaele Pesamino who grabbed a dazzling hat-trick against Australia. Pesamino was awarded the Player of Year award in the aftermath of the last leg of the season.

Scotland delighted the 12,700 Murrayfield fans with a victory in the Plate, beating Argentina in coach Stephen Gemmell’s last IRB Sevens tournament.

The Samoans finished 15 points clear from runners-up New Zealand (149pts), with Australia (108) in third. Fiji took fourth (108pts) followed by England (96) and South Africa (80).

Samoa grab 4th Cup win

Jacob Taylor gave Australia an ideal start in the final with an early score as the Aussies chased back-to-back Cup titles. But Samoa struck back through scores from Levasa, Mai and a Pesamino breakaway to give them a 17-7 half-time lead.

Captain James Stannard’s try gave Australia hope at the beginning of the second period but from then on it was one way traffic from the clinical champions. Pesamino struck back immediately before Fautua Otto’s two tries made sure of the win.

The man of the moment, Pesamino, finished his season off by collecting his own kick to touch down in the final moments of the 41-14 win - their fourth Cup success of the year.

Unforgettable semi-final

Samoa had to wait for the last minute of the second period of extra-time to beat England 15-12 in stamina sapping semi-final. Captain Lolo Lui's drop goal penalty doing enough to qualify the final, a feat which confirmed them as IRB Sevens World Series winners.

Afa Aiono put the Samoans ahead but Tom Powell equalised for the English in a low scoring first half. Leading try scorer Mikaele Pesamino looked to have given the Samoans the win and the Series but Greg Barden's late effort levelled things. Ben Gollings missed the conversion and the game went into extra time. England got stung again in the penalty count, with Lui making them pay at the death amid wild celebrations.

Australia made their second successive final with a first win against New Zealand in eight years. Tries to Stubbs, Jenkins, Karauria-Henry, and Vanderglas giving Mick O'Connor's side a deserved 24-19 win.

Samoa were dominant against an injury ravaged South Africa winning 19-0 in the quarter-finals. England upset the home fans by defeating Scotland 7-19 with Nick Royle scoring a double in the last eight tie.

Australia continued their fine form by beating a disappointing Fiji in the third quarter-final, while New Zealand were clinical in their victory over Argentina. Stowers, Mikkelson, Cama, Baker all scored for the Kiwis.

Scots reward fans

Scotland delighted the home fans with a clinical 19-0 over Argentina to win the Plate. Scores coming from Turnbull, Shaw, and Cairns in the 19-0 win.

Scotland came back from a two score deficit to beat South Africa in the semi-finals. Ben Cairns scoring the crucial try, after superb build-up play from the hosts in the 12-19 win. Argentina booked their passage to the final with a late Diego Palma try that knocked out Fiji.

Brave Wales take Bowl

Wales were down to the bare reserves for their finals with injuries and suspensions taking their toll. But Rhys Jones, Lloyd William, Rhys Webb, and Craig Hill all scored in the 26-10 win against Kenya. Humphrey Kayange scored two first half efforts for the Africans.

Russian success in Shield

Russia stunned Canada to claim the Shield, 26-7. Igor Galinovskiy scored two tries with Vladimir Ostroushko and Roman Timofeev also getting tries for the Russians.

Canada were too good for error strewn Italy in the semi finals winning 35-0, with Russia heroic in defense in the win against inconsistent Portugal in the other last four clash.

Congratulations Samoa. This shall be a day long remembered in tiny Samoa's history. The boys were obviously motivated by the memory of last year but now after the pain of the tsunami, their efforts has borne fruit and this will bring joy to many a fale in Samoa. This can only inspire Samoa's youth to look up to this team and say "Yes we can".

God bless the boys in blue, and Samoa
