more »Resurgent Scotland on song at Edinburgh Sevens

It proved to be a day of high drama at the Edinburgh Sevens with only New Zealand and hosts Scotland winning all their games at the pool stages.
World Series leaders Samoa are still on course for a maiden IRB Sevens although their mediocre form of late was illustrated in a confidence-sapping 10-31 loss to Argentina.
Samoa need to make tomorrow’s final to guarantee a Series win, whilst Gordon Tietjens’ Kiwis need to win the tournament and hope the islanders lose in either the quarter or semi-finals.
Scotland resurrected their floundering season by dominating Pool D with big wins against Fiji, USA, and Wales in front of 11,000 fans at Murrayfield. It is the fourth year in succession that they have made the Cup quarter-finals in Edinburgh.
Elsewhere Canada provided another shock by stunning a below-par England 26-19, but it wasn't enough to see them qualify. The English's 21-21 draw with Australia proved enough for Ben Ryan's side to make the last-eight.
Cup quarter finals:
Samoa v South Africa
Scotland v England
Australia v Fiji
New Zealand v Argentina
Pool A - Wobbly Samoa and Argentina through
After losing to France earlier in the day, Argentina pulled off a miraculous 10-31 win against Samoa to edge into the quarter-finals from Pool A. Tries from Tuculet backed up by efforts from Ramiro del Busto, Nicolas Bruzzone, and Martin Miguel Nunez Lasalle proved enough for the South Americans to qualify on points difference.
France, under new coach Frederic Pomarel, were unlucky to miss out on qualification after beating Kenya in their last game.
The Samoans leaked tries against France with two Camille Canivet giving the French early hope. But Alafoti Fa'osiliva’s two ties proved important the Islanders who eventually eased away to a 38-26 win. Argentina piled on more misery to Kenya with Tuculet's double, aiding the Pumas to a 28-14 win.
Samoa started their day off in the best possible manner thrashing a ragged Kenya 42-5. Two tries apiece to Pesamino and Fa’osiliva did the early damage. The Argentines couldn’t break down a resurgent France, surprisingly losing out 5-14.
Pool B - Kiwis looking confident
New Zealand looked assured all day and finished with a professional 24-7 win over last weekend’s London Sevens runners-up, South Africa. Captain DJ Forbes was at his very powerful best scoring a double in the Pool B clash
Zar Lawrence chalked up his 100th IRB try in New Zealand’s 52-0 win over Italy. The veteran put on a virtuoso performance with Tim Mikkelson getting a first half hat-trick.
New Zealand followed Samoa’s lead early on and breezed past Russia with Sherwin Stowers impressing. A Ryno Benjamin hat-trick for South Africa wore down Italy 49-5 in their early Pool B clash.
Russia enjoyed a rare IRB Sevens win beating Italy 24-12 in their final match of the day.
Pool C - Australia maintain run
Australia captain James Stannard kept his nerve to kick a post-hooter conversion to draw with England in the penultimate game of the day in Pool C. Tries from Odouza, Gollings, and Turner had given England a 21-0 lead. But Australia, using the momentum of their London Sevens win, bounced back with Samisoni Latunipulu’s late try the key.
Canada's shock win against England was built around two outstanding Sean Duke tries. Despite England going over through Royle, Rodwell, and Odouza, it was Mensah-Coker's winner that upset the English, 19-24. Australia were made to graft hard by Portugal but gritted their teeth to pull through to win 35-14.
England and Australia both struggled in their first games of the day both pulled through for wins. Australia edged Canada 14-0, while England were made to work hard by the Portuguese (17-5) with Turner, Royle and Lindsay-Hague scoring.
Pool D – Impressive Scotland show ability
Scotland made it three wins from three with an impressive 33-21 result over Wales on the day’s final fixture. Colin Shaw and Roddy Grant both scored braces to delight the home fans and secure top spot in Pool D.
Scotland’s opened their day with inspirational win against the Fijians to lift Murrayfield. It was very much a team effort with Houston, Grant, Robertson, Turnbull, and Shaw all crossing. They backed it up with a convincing 12-33 win against USA with Andrew Turnbell's electric two tries bringing the crowd to life.
Wales also enjoyed an early win against USA despite conceding two scores early on. Evans, Cuthbert, and Jones tries gives Wales the 10-19 win.
