Spain win again on FIRA Sevens

Wednesday 26 May 2010 (UR7s)

Spain were again victorious in the second stage of the FIRA Sevens at the weekend. Following up from their win the previous week in Sopot, the Spanish were again the victors in Denmark’s Odense beating France 19-14 in the final.

With their senior VII participating in the last rounds of the IRB Sevens World Series, France’s second string racked up the points in the lead up to final.

Pool wins against Norway (46-0) Hungry (40-12) Denmark (35-7) and Lithuania (12-0) followed by 64-0 hammering of Andorra in the semi-finals made them the favourites heading into the final.

But it was the Spanish who appeared more battle hardened in the weekend’s final, aided by a tense 19-21 win over Lithuania in their semi-finals.

Andorra proved themselves as the surprise package of the weekend. and after suffering a 0-52 loss to Spain in the pool stages, battled to wins over Czech Republic (12-19), Switzerland (7-12), and Luxemburg (5-19) to make the Cup.

On finals day they ran out of steam though and after the French loss also were denied in the 3rd/4th play-off losing 0-31 to Lithuania.

Czech Republic took fifth place beating Switzerland 28-17.
