Scotland's Commonwealth Games appearance unsure

Wednesday 26 May 2010 (UR7s & IRB/Martin Seras Lima)

Scotland Sevens’ participation at this October’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi could be under threat.

Commonwealth Games Scotland’s criteria strictly states that a sport must have a chance of finishing in the top eight in their respective competitions.

So far on this season’s IRB Sevens World Series, Stephen Gemmell’s side have failed to reach a Cup quarter-final and are yet to pick up any point thus far on the Grand Prix style format.

The weekend’s marks the final leg of the Series at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield, where the Scottish team reach a Cup semi-final last year.

The side has been boosted by the likes of Ally Hogg and Roddy Grant for the last two tournaments of the season. But with Delhi’s Games set to clash with early rounds of the Heineken Cup there are no guarantees Scotland will be able to have full access to their strongest side.

In order to have their selection confirmed, and in line with all of the other 16 sports, Scotland Rugby Sevens need to demonstrate the potential to finish in the top eight at the Games and confirm the availability of the strongest possible combination of players,” said Michael Cavanagh, chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland.

“We have been in ongoing discussions with the SRU and will review the situation with them following this weekend’s final leg of the IRB Sevens.”

The Scots have recalled Ben Cairns for this weekend’s Edinburgh leg after a three year absence from the Sevens circuit. Cairns will replace captain Scott Forrest who misses out due to an Achilles injury picked up at the recent London Sevens.

Scotland were knocked out at the Bowl quarter-final stage in London and face Fiji, Wales and USA at the pool stages this weekend.
