16 teams to compete for Scrumqueens title

Saturday 22 May 2010

Sixteen top women's rugby sides will battle it out for the inaugural Scrumqueens.com women’s 7s title at the Rugby Rocks Tournament on June 12.

There are five teams from the RFUW Premier League competing alongside four other UK club-based sides, one Irish club team (pictured) and six teams made up of a range of players from various clubs.

The full lineup of teams is: Richmond 1, Richmond 2, Bristol PROPS, Wasps, Saracens, Worcester, Wimbledon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Teddington, Pirates, Daughters of Serevi, Lollipops, Buccaneers, Pink Ba Baas, Wooden Spoons, and Chess Valley Goonettes.

For more on our competing teams see below.

The women’s competition will be split into four pools each with four teams each with the top two sides from each pool going through to Plate and Cup semi-finals. The overall Cup Final will take place on the main pitch at the end of the day, as a warm-up game for the National 7s series final featuring professional men’s 7s players. The pools will take place on Richmond's main grounds as well as next door on some pitches on Old Deer Park.

The Scrumqueens.com women’s 7s will be played alongside the Rugby Rocks Men’s Open, with 32 teams, the National 7s Series featuring 9 elite teams, and a social men’s competition.

Once the rugby is over – the fun really begins with live music from Feeder, the Parlotones, Just Jack and many more top acts, while England’s first game at the World Cup (the football one!) will be shown live on big screens around the venue.

Team biogs:

Richmond:
The club will be playing on their home ground and with two teams entered they will be hoping for some silverware. Their two sides will be made up of players from their three club sides, who all compete in the top three leagues in England.

Bristol PROPS
The Bristol players will have many trips to London this year as they’ll be travelling up this summer to see club captain Catherine Spencer skipper England at the World Cup. For this tournament they’l l be hoping to kick-start a summer of silverware. This side have teamed up with the PROPS charity for this and other events.

Wasps:
Another top side in the country, Wasps will also be able to choose from their two club sides, one of which was promoted this year to the second tier of club rugby in the UK. Though captain Shelley Rae is hoping to take a management role on the day, we’re confident the former England captain will be roped into competing in one or two games at least!

Lollipops/Highfield:
The Irish club side are travelling to London after a good season in Ireland’s top league but the side who terrorise Kinsale every year with their fluorescent kit and how shall we put it – extremely fun-loving squad- will certainly be up for plenty of fun late in the evening.

Saracens:
A top English club side, Sarries have entered what they are dubbing a “social” team into this competition but we reckon with the talent they have in abundance that they’ll still be a team to watch for in the pool stages.

Wooden Spoons
The Wooden Spoons play as representatives of the Wooden Spoon Charity and the squad usually comprises a mixture of experienced players including recently retired internationals and present players from the four home unions. These are top class competitive players and will be one of the tournament favourites.

Pink Ba Baas
A group of friends from different clubs around the UK, this side are well known on the 7s circuit as they compete regularly around Europe. Watch out for their eye catching kit!

Worcester
Like the other Premier league teams at this event, despite not having their England players available, Worcester are likely to have a strong side and will be tough to beat in the pool stages.

Wimbledon
After a stellar club season where they were promoted from their league in some style, Wimbledon will be hoping to keep their success going over the summer.

Teddington
A popular side in West London, Teddington certainly know how to have fun off the pitch. On the park the Busy Park based outfit will be hoping to make a mark this season on the 7s circuit – although the team will lineout at Rugby Rocks just days after a 10-day end of season tour of Kenya, Expect some tired legs!

Hammersmith and Fulham
Another west London side who are full of talent, Hammers had an excellent end to their season and feature a few scarily pacey backs out wide who will be looking to make a big impact. A side who will make themselves heard too in the evening once the entertainment kicks off!

Pirates
The Pirates are one of the sides who are joining Rugby Rocks from the Church 7s this year. Made up of a variety of mostly London based club players, this is fun social side off the pitch and a seriously talented side on it.

Daughters of Serevi
Set up in 2008 to play alongside the well known Sons of Serevi men’s side, this team is made up of UK based women’s players – many from Harlequins rugby

Buccaneers & Chess Valley Goonettes.
These are another two sides who join our competition from the Church 7s and are two teams we don’t know much about – save to say that they are made up of a range of club players in the UK.
