No-show Naba dropped from Fiji Sevens

Tuesday 18 May 2010 (UR7s)

Fiji Sevens coach Iliesa Tanivula has been forced to include six new players for the final legs of the IRB Sevens World Series in London (22-23 May) and Edinburgh (29-30 May).

Newcomers include Randall Kamea,Henry Seniloli,  Ilai Tinai, Aisake Katonibau and Semi Keli.

James Brown will also return to the team as third place Fiji look to close the gap between leaders Samoa and New Zealand.

Captain Emosi Vucago has linked up with Fiji’s 15-a-side squad with Osea Kolinisau in France on trial with Agen. Setefano Cakau, Jiuta Lutumailagi, Niumaia Cakacaka, Nasoni Roko, and Waisale Beci are also unavailable.

Retained members of the squad include newly installed skipper Seremaia Burotu, Pio Tuwai, Apisa Naiyabo, Watisoni Votu.

Etonia Naba was dropped from the squad after failing to turn up for a pre-departure camp whilst Turuva Lumelume was also ruled out late after injuring his ankle.

Poor discipline disappoints

“This is a team sport. I expected a lot from Naba, as I do with the rest of the older players to set a good example for the new boys. Its individuals like him that will not help the team with the kind of attitude he refuses to shed,” said coach Tanivula speaking to Fiji Live.

“This is a young team and we know we have a lot riding on this final leg but there’s no pressure. This final leg is really to build up for next season more than anything.

“The ball now is in their court, they have a lot of proving to do but I believe in them. These young players are not in the team to make up numbers but they have been working hard to see them earn a spot in the Fiji team.

“We just have to get through our pool game and prepare for playoffs, one game at a time,” he added.

The Fijians face South Africa, Canada, and France in the pool stages at Twickenham on Saturday.
