UR7s tournaments prove a success at Tourfest

Thursday 13 May 2010 (UR7s)

Lloret de Mar on Spain’s Costa Brava played host to this year’s TourFest, a new social sports festival. Included in the programme, held over the recent Bank Holiday weekend, was a rugby sevens event in association with UR7s.

The men’s event proved to be the most popular tournament of the weekend with 16 teams split into two pools.

The two top teams in each pool played each other in the semi-finals, with Catalunya and BUC playing first in an exciting all-Catalan clash. BUC couldn’t handle the power of Catalunya though losing out comprehensively 40-0.
This was followed by tow English sides, The Last Suppers and Billingham Colts, fighting out to meet the Spaniards in the final

It was the Billingham Boys who pulled through though with a 24-7 victory. Everyone gathered round the main pitch to see the Billingham Colts and Catalonian National Team battle it out to see which side became the first ever UR7s TourFest Men’s Rugby Champions.

In the end the strength and size of the home team shone through as they took the title by 31-7 but at no point did Billingham look out of place and could hold their heads high as they walked from the pitch to rapturous applause from the crowd.

The women’s competition, also backed by UR7s, saw teams play each other in a round-robin format.

Unfortunately, even with all the British top players and the talents of Event Manager, Chrissy Siczowa, the British Baa Bas were unable to defeat a strong Spanish side in an exciting clash.

The eventual champions were England’s Wellingborough Ladies.
