Acquitted Chalmers hoping for Melrose glory

Saturday 8 May 2010 (UR7s)

It is set to be an exciting climax in the Scottish Borders today (May 8) with the final event of this season’s Kings of The Sevens at Jed-Forest RFC.

Four teams are still capable of winning the overall trophy, with Melrose currently sitting at the top of the table with 43. Selkirk and Kelso are locked together on 41 with hosts Jed-forest in fourth on 39.

There are many permutations but put simply, if Melrose, Selkirk or Kelso were to win the Jed 7s they would also take the overall title, while Jedforest would need to win and ensure that Melrose were not in the final for them to be victorious.

Melrose has made a late surge for the title following three consecutive wins over the last few weeks at Peebles, Gala, and Earlston respectively on the knockout style Grand Prix style format.

The Greenyards club received the good news this week that coach Craig Chalmers has been acquitted at an independent disciplinary hearing at the SRU.

Chalmers was asked to answer a complaint of misconduct after the club's annual Melrose Sevens tournament last month.

It was alleged he acted in a manner towards a match official that contravened Scottish Rugby Union disciplinary rules.

The former Scotland fly-half was also arrested for a breach of the peace and given a £60 fixed penalty in April.

The panel’s statement, released after the hearing at Murrayfield on Wednesday evening, said that the witnesses’ evidence 'did not paint a consistent picture of the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged incident’.

Jed Forest 7s Draw:

Watsonians v Gala
Hawick v Haddington
Kirkcaldy v Langholm
Selkirk v Stewart's Melville

Berwick v Peebles
Melrose v Edinburgh Accies
Boroughmuir v Jedforest
Kelso v Heriot's
