Church 7s were the undisputed toast of Kinsale last weekend winning both the Saturday and Sunday Senior Men’s competitions.

The eventual winners faced 2009 champions, the Kukri White Hart Marauders, in the €10,000 match on Sunday. Church, effectively a Susies Saloon side with a heavy Kiwi influence, proved too powerful for their young rivals winning 32-19. 

It was a brave performance from the Marauders who were forced to put together a young scratch side, including players from their Academy, following injuries and player unavailability.

In the semi-finals two conversions proved crucial against Sextant (14-10) with Church disappointing local Irish fans beating hopes Shamrock Warriors 30-10. 

At the quarter-finals stage the Marauders hit their straps beating the Kamasutra Sevens 31-5 with the Gilbert Pubs came up short against Sextant 19-14. Dutch Sevens lost out to the Shamrock Warriors (7-14) with Church forced to graft against Redherring Scarlet Pimpernels 19-12. 

On Saturday, Sextant pushed the Church all the way just but fell short by the slimmest of margins losing 26-25 in the final.

In the Ladies competition the Irish Vixens didn’t concede a point in the lead up to the final sweeping past Golden Girls (49-0), Pink Ladies (34-0), Kinsale Ladies (46-0), Lollipops (33-0). In the €3500 final the Vixens weren’t to be denied, despite a courageous attempt by Tommy Bohs, taking the title 48-10. 

It proved an extra special win for the Vixens who were disappointed runners-up to the Wooden Spoon last year.
