Rugby Masters 10s brings legends together

Tuesday 4 May 2010 (UR7s)

Christine Noble Children’s Foundation (CNCF) triumphed in the battled of the former legends at the inaugural Rugby Masters 10s at Twickenham Stoop.

The champions faced hosts Harlequins in the final but with the likes of vintage operators such as Chris Sheasby, Allan Bateman, Freddie Tuilagi, and Tim Stimpson in the CNCF squad, they proved to strong during the 20-5 win.

Abi Ekoku was crowned the tournament's MVP.

CNCF’s win was built on an outstanding defensive effort which saw them only leak two tries throughout the day. The side captained by Ian Dawson started with wins against Sale (22-0) and Worcester (28-0) to qualify top of Group 1. There they met a high quality London Irish outfit that included Mike Catt and England’s Attack Coach, Brian Smith. But it was CNCF who proved too much for their rivals winning comfortably 33-7.

Harlequins took down Wasps 33-0 in their opener before beating Quins 14-0. In a hard fought semi-final they ground out a 19-5 result against a dogged Gloucester.

Worcester took the Plate beating Bristol (50-7) with Sale beating Bath to the Bowl (45-0).

Other former players present at the event included Matt Perry, Steven Hanley, and Mark Regan.

The event was the idea of England rugby legend Phil Greening and was about bringing former legends of the sport back onto the pitch and back into their team colours to revive old rivalries and old friendships for various charities including the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation.

Greening is also an ambassador for the National Sevens Series that is owned and promoted by UR7s.
