Scorpions triumphant at North Walsham

Tuesday 4 May 2010 (UR7s)

The Scorpions kicked off their season with a win at the North Walsham Sevens at the weekend.

Despite late call-offs, including that of favourites Leicester Tigers, and inclement weather the annual North Walsham Sevens was again well received.

Following the qualification stages, the unbeaten sides were the McCallum Scorpions, Norfolk Young Guns, West Suffolk Legends and hosts North Walsham Vikings, who all booked themselves semi-final berths.

The Young Guns, a side from Norwich School, showed genuine potential before inevitably bowing out to the Scorpions. In second semi-final the Vikings (West Suffolk College) were edged out by the Legends.

In the final it was the Scorpions who had the edge but they were made to fight all the way before emerging winners 24-10 to take the Jill Hambling Trophy and the winner’s cheque of £3,000 with the Legends pocketing £1000.

The plate competition was a triumph for Diss who beat a fit and well organised Norwich Medics 31-6 to take the cheque and the Mike Biggs Trophy.

The event supported the Help for Heroes campaign and a cheque for £1000 was presented to a representative of the Royal Anglian Regiment.
