Esher power to Middlesex Club Sevens

Sunday 2 May 2010 (UR7s)

Esher romped to their first Middlesex Club Sevens title on Saturday at Richmond Athletic ground in West London.

The club, recently promoted to the Championship, were the class act throughout, beating a robust Redingensians 45-19 in the day’s finale.

Mark Odejobi, on loan from London Wasps, was the Surrey club’s standout man, scoring an emphatic hat-trick in the final, despite the feisty Redingensians opening the scoring.

Esher, as proved the case throughout the day, were too physical at the breakdown and despite a long season had the obvious fitness edge on their opponents.

Lively winger JJ Bell threatened for the Redingensians and created a couple of later scores for the Berkshire side, who won at Windsor the previous week. But Esher was not to be denied counter-attacking late to finish with the 45-19 win.

Following a dissapointing showing at the Sunshine Sevens, the win pleased coach Chris Kibble who paid tribute to the strength of his squad.

“Our squad was were really competitive and we could rotate well and meant we were still fresh in the final which always helps. We improved steadily throughout the day which is important so we were hitting our peak in the latter stages,” said Kibble.

“The majority of these boys here will play for our 2s on a Saturday, but we had a couple of guys who might play for the first team too.”

The win means Esher will get the chance to play at Twickenham in an exhibition match at the Middlesex Charity Sevens.

Esher had stunned defending champions Millfield Old Boys in the semi-finals, with disciplined and combative defence forcing Miffy into uncharacteristic errors in the 48-7 dispatching.

Last year’s runners-up Rosslyn Park never got going through the majority of the tournament and lost out 19-14 to the Redingensians in their semi-final.

The Park had been made to work hard by Ruislip in their quarter-final clash coming through 17-12. Esher were too formidable for Saracens Amateurs (43-7), with the Millfield Old Boys punishing Chiswick mistakes (26-5).

Elsewhere in the main club competition the Sudbury Court Jesters were too savvy for Twickenham in the Plate final (27-0) with Ruislip 2 taking the Bowl beating London Nigeria (19-0). In the men’s students Imperical College defended their title beating KCRS in 19-12 in the final with the University College Ladies victorious in the women’s competition.

In the Vase competition Wasps FC dominated Hendon 40-0 to take the trophy.
