Marauders looking for more Kinsale success

Friday 30 April 2010 (UR7s)

Ireland’s biggest rugby party returns this weekend with 85 teams and fans flocking to Ireland’s Southern Coast for the Kinsale Sevens.

In the Senior Men’s competition it has been the White Hart Marauder’s who have crashed the party in recent years, with the Eversley based side winning both the Saturday and Sunday competitions last year.

Despite the withdrawals of Wales Sevens players such as Alex Cuthbert and Ifan Evans and Ireland’s Max Rant McDonald, the Marauder’s led by Howard Graham will still boast regulars such as James Reilly, Adam Bishop, and Paul Jarvis for their 2010 opener.

They have also thrust three youngsters (Chris Rose, Pepi Nanci and Jake Henry) into the limelight who were part of the victorious Marauders Academy side from last Sunday at East Grinstead RFC.

“It was really pleasing to was I was really impressed with them. We always try and get some home grown talent and they were all superb last week,” added Torbett.

“Kinsale is an ideal venue for this event and because it is not a big town everyone there is to do with the tournament, says the Marauders Manager Barrie Torbett.

“We’ve been going there for about five or six years it is a very friendly event. It is a beautiful setting for playing rugby and we have won it three times with the prize funds one of the best.”

This year’s sees €10,000 on offer for the winner’s of the Sunday event, with €20,000 the total pot for the Senior men.

There is also the Haye’s Women competition, which saw Irish Vixens beat the Wooden Spoon to last year’s major prize. There is also events for Juniors and Seniors throughout the weekend with big screens showing Munster and Leinster’s respective Heineken Cup Semi-Finals.

Pat Maher, Heineken's Events and Sponsorship Manager, said: "Kinsale RFC is the place to be on the May Bank Holiday weekend.

"The Kinsale Sevens is a very well organised and respected rugby Sevens festival showcasing competitive rugby where the hosts continue to enhance food and beverage facilities for all who attend.

"The event is a showcase for sports and tourism in Ireland as it celebrates the spirit of rugby with a festival atmosphere.

"Heineken has been privileged to be part of this since its inception 22 years ago and we continue to enjoy the experience the festival gives to locals, rugby fans and thrill seekers alike".
