English athletes are to be given the go-ahead to travel to Delhi for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in October.
Speculation suggested that the English team would pull out of the Games because of security fears. England Sevens have competed at the last three Commonwealth Games since the sport was added to the programme for Kula Lumpur in 1998.
After receiving regular security updates from Delhi, Commonwealth Games England (CGE) is set to write to an assessment to all its sports governing bodies to inform them that the team will travel to India for the games which run from Oct 3-14. Scotland and Wales will send separate teams.
CGE’s confirmation should ensure that England will be well-represented in India. However, athletes will still be free to opt out of the Games if they possess doubts over their own safety.
England Sevens’ record at the Games is mixed having being knocked out in the quarter-final stages in 1998 and at their home event in Manchester in 2002. They did however pick up a Silver medal in 2006 losing to three-time gold medallists New Zealand in the final.
England coach Ben Ryan has hinted he will be using the next two legs of the Series as the start of his preparations for Delhi in October.
