Diggers continue to dominate Zambia sevens

Tuesday 27 April 2010 (UR7s)

Celebrated Zambian rugby side, ‘Men-At-Work’ Diggers, have demonstrated yet again that they are a force to reckon with this season after winning the Luanshya Copper Mines (LCM) Sevens tournament, their second title of the year.

Diggers, who last season failed to collect any silverware, have come into the 2010 season a more forceful side, winning two of the four competitions so far on the Zambia Rugby Football Union (ZRFU) calendar.

For their efforts Diggers got K6 million while ‘Killer Bees’ Ndola Wanderers stormed to success in the Plate final picking up K2 million prizemoney.

Despite the late dropouts by the Green Eagles, Prisons, University of Zambia (UNZA) and Kansanshi, a regular feature at Zambian tournaments, organisers still went ahead to host a successful day.

Diggers, who are also the American Tournament champions, took the title after defeating Red Arrows, the Bonnie Mutale 10s champions, by a slender 7-0 score line.

A try by Ackim Mushota converted by Beneya Mukwamba was enough to seal a memorable victory over one of Diggers’ major rivals.

In the semi-finals, Diggers beat pre-tournament favourites ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka 21-0 with tries from Mushota, Patrick Chanda and Mukwamba coupled with three conversions by John Kabwela that were enough to eliminate an injury-hit midlands side.

Arrows saw off a stubborn Green Buffaloes 14-7 in the other semi-final and were victorious over Chibuluma in the quarter-finals, with Diggers beating hosts Roan 27-0 at the same stage.

In the Plate final, the Killer Bees played some superb rugby to set-up the win with Kelvin Changwe and Billy Malipembe some of the try-scorers.

Zambia’s premier sevens tournament is the Lusaka Castle Sevens, which will take place on August 28-29 this year.

In the past the likes of the British Army, Samurai, Public School Wanderers and the South African Under 23 squad have attended.
