Kelso take control of Kings of the Sevens

Monday 26 April 2010 (UR7s)

Kelso have overhauled Selkirk at the top of the Kings of the Sevens table after two more hard fought tournaments over the weekend.

On Saturday it was Kelso putting two losing Cup finals the previous weekend to bed with a win at the Langholm Sevens. With conditions perfect, a free-flowing final ensued against a talented Edinburgh University, with Kelso just having the edge, 36-30, to take the title.

The Poynder Park side were in ruthless form in the semi-finals gaining revenge on Hawick from the previous weekend in a thorough 33-12 win. It was a battle of the capital in the other semi-final as the students from Edinburgh survived a thriller against Edinburgh Accies (26-24).

Jed Forest are consistently picking up points and remain in the Kings of Sevens hunt despite losing out in the last-eight to Accies. Kelso hammered the hosts Langholm (33-7) with Edinburgh Uni defeating defending Kings of Sevens champions Watsonians (17-10). Last year’s Langholm winners, Hawick, beat Gala in the other quarter final, 31-19.

Melrose successfully defended their Peebles crown on Sunday, with Craig Chalmer’s side putting aside the disappointment of losing the Scottish Cup Final (15-a-side) to Ayr just a day earlier.

The Greenyards outfit were magnificent in the final proving far too powerful for Jedforest in 54-7 rout. They put out Boroughmuir, Gala and Selkirk in earlier rounds showing remarkable fitness following the previous day’s exploits.

Top try scorer was Callum Anderson who was also voted Player of the Tournament. Hosts Peebles excited the crowd at the Gytes by making the semi-finals but were undone by Jed 26-10.

Kelso lead the table by four points with Jed Forest second and Selkirk in third. This weekend sees the Gala and Earlston legs of the Series take place,

This weekend sees Gala ( 1 May) and Earlston (2 May) hosts the next two legs, with Jed Forest bringing this year’s circuit to a conclusion on 8 May.
