New Zealand win Amsterdam 7s and make it a World Sevens Series double with overall title

New Zealand won the Amsterdam Sevens, the fourth and final round of the inaugural IRB Women's Sevens World Series, beating Canada 33-24 in an enthralling final.

Sean Horan's side had earlier beaten Spain 14-5 in the Cup quarter finals to ensure they would lift the inaugural World Series title as well, finishing the Series with 74 points ahead of England (60), Canada (52), and USA (48).

Portia Woodman ended the season as the top points (105) and try (21) scorer and she scored the try that gave New Zealand a 28-24 lead before Vaine Greig secured the win.... more »

HSBC World Sevens Series Memories: The very first season

It all began in 1999 - 14 years ago, over 100 tournaments, and more matches played than anyone can count that is well into the multiple thousands.

The IRB Sevens World Series, inaugurated in Dubai on 2 December of that year and ushered in by the chairman of the International Rugby Board Vernon Pugh with the words, "this competition has set in place another important element in the IRB’s drive to establish rugby as a truly global sport, one with widespread visibility and steadily improving standards of athletic excellence."

14 years later that statement seems more appropriate than ever as everyones eyes are on Rio and Rugby 7s joining the olympic family with another world cup coming this summer.... more »
