Sun shines on South Coast at Petersfield Pub 7s
The annual Petersfield RFC Pub sevens tournament took place last Sunday 1st May, and it once again proved to be a great success. The tournament attracts the teams of local pubs and bars from the area, but is anything but a pub standard of rugby; Faustino's Tapas bar, the eventual Cup winners, featured many of the Guildford RFC 1st team. The glorious weather led to a large turnout, with BBQs erupting all over the grounds, and the beers flowing from 10am- because you can't have Pub sevens without beer. Coxys Windmill Inn certainly won the prize for 'most enthusiastic attempt to honour their fancy dress kit' with Red stripes in hand and Bob Marley blasting from the teams gazebo in true Jamacian spirit. 'Coxys' perfromance on the pitch mirrored their performance off it, with speedy and stylish play taking then within 2 points of the Cup final, before losing out to Tapas 21-19 in the Semi. The team all played with '6' on their backs in memory of former Petersfield RFC star Peter Cox.
The Hawkley managed to recover from shaky Pool form to triumph in the Bowl Final against Railway Chu's, with The Kings were successful in the Plate competition. To round off the day, The Old House @ Home took on Faustino's Tapas Bar in what turned out to be an exciting, hard fought match. It was Tapas all round however as their style of sharp running rugby proved too much for their opponents. The Cup goes to Midhurst for the first time in its history and was fully deserved. A modest, but extremely good natured and well supported event, the Petersfield Pub Sevens provides the perfect stage for recreational rugby, whilst also allowing a touch of class to shine through- long may it continue.
